Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

At some point slightly before the Valentine's season, this pygmy was left, as an egg, in a pile of other abandoned eggs. However, before the egg ended up in a suitably visible position for someone to give it a home, the egg got covered up by all of the Valentine eggs dragons were leaving as gifts. Thus the pygmy egg waited and waited, getting more impatient by the hour, until at last the holiday eggs ran out and it ended up on top of the pile. Messenger was just passing by when the tiny egg caught her eye. By the time she picked it up, Ariadnie was so impatient that she hatched right in Messenger's arms, and has remained with her ever since.
