Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

There is no way to confine Houdini Goldfrill, nor limit the mischief he gets up to. When he was first hatched, Houdini made fast friends with the green hatchling Psyvex Safix, and the two became partners in crime. They were almost never in the nest, as at the time it stunk like rotting meat, kudos to the near-lifeless vampire hatchling that would grow into Kirabi Mikadzuki. They became well known for getting into things they should not, and playing pranks on cranky dragons, but always managing to get out of tight spots. Until they decided to play a prank on the younger magi, who were studying the freezing spell at the time. The prank was a disaster, the two frightened one magi so badly that his spell backfired, and the two hatchlings were caught in the blast. So although they had not wanted to be frozen, and it had not been necessary, the two are still frozen hatchlings to this day, and still cause trouble wherever they go.
