Hooktalon Dragons are a two-headed breed named for the long, curved claw that grows on the first finger of each of their hands. Their skin is tough and covered in razor sharp, tooth-like scales, and as they age they grow a dense, keratinous club on the end of their tail. Wild Hooktalons live in migratory, matriarchal clans around deserts and hot scrublands, hunting and stealing kills from other dragons as they please. They are notoriously ill-tempered and the females, being the largest and most aggressive of their kind, will often lash out at their male counterparts in brief, explosive disputes over anything and everything. The only creature with which a Hooktalon will not fight is itself: though the dragon has two heads and thus two brains, a strong connection between its brains allows them to function as one.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Two-headed dragons are unique enough to deserve a separate classification from ordinary dragons. They have two necks, two brains, two mouths, but one stomach and one main body. The two heads usually work together, but there are times when they will fight each other, snapping back and forth. Their unique anatomy prevents them from breeding with single-headed dragons.

Duellum Calor, Protector of the Innocent, whose name translates to Heat of Battle, is the most well-known of the chronicled Five Protectors of Galsreim, wielding no connection to magic or any element, but is strongly associated with balance. Despite his species's sour reputation, his duty to protect those who are falsely accused of wrongdoing far exceed his instincts of self-preservation.

Reckless and battle-hungry as an adolescent, he constantly sought out skirmishes with others, regardless the size and species. One such catastrophe with the mate of an Ember Dragon named Incendium Furorem birthed a fiery animosity towards Duellum Calor and sought out revenge by ruthlessly killing his sleeping pack and driving him out of his home. Fuming over the loss of his family, he wandered the desert swearing that he will bring justice to those who condemn the innocent. Nearing a line of palms bordering an oasis, he encountered Decor Arbores, who awakened him as the Protector of the Innocent.
