Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Claudiio is a loner. He doesn't fit in with the daydream dragons, since he is too young to understand the math involved in creating daydreams. He certainly doesn't fit in with the gold dragons, since he is not a gold, and therefore not eligible for their elevated status. Most of the time Claudiio follows around the unnamed Deep Sea dragon, as he feels that they have a connection. The unnamed Deep Sea dragon pays no attention to Claudiio, as unnamed has many friends.
