Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It is clearly a water animal.

And look! Its fins have grown larger! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

For reasons unknown, Kai's egg ended up near an inland lake, far from its original ocean home. The Water dragons of the lake tended to her there, and took her in as one of their own. However, being an oceanic breed, Kai's growing body was unable to adapt to her freshwater home and she had to be frozen. Too young to understand her condition, Kai continues to live out her carefree life with the naivety of a hatchling. She fully believes she is a Water dragon instead of a Bluna, so she doesn't understand why the other Water hatchlings make fun of her for being different. Her only friend is another frozen hatchling, a male Water named Rivo. Together, they swim quietly close to the shoreline, constructing elaborate tales and going on their own imaginary adventures together.
