Seasonal Dragons take on the characteristics of the season during which they are born. Thus, eggs that are laid in spring match the pink flowers and green buds of spring, and those that are laid in the summer grow to depict the bright green of the forest trees and the yellow of the sun. Eggs laid in autumn display the bright colors of leaves falling from trees, and those that are laid during winter take on the appearance of the icy snow.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Veranai takes her species quite seriously. As a summer dragon, she lives true to an unwritten set of rules she had dreamed up as a hatchling. She lives only in places where summer currently reigns. Veranai even named herself after summer- 'verano' means 'summer' in Spanish, and since Veranai thought that was a bit too masculine for her tastes, she just switched it around to her liking.

Veranai's Code, or the list of rules she follows, can be shortened down and roughly translated into this: "Be summer, feel summer, make summer. Be the warm, dry wind that blows the humid air and lifts up little ones' kites. Be the ferocious thunderstorms that shake the earth on a strangely cool night. Be the promise of ice cream and early summer apples. Be the freedom from the schools, the warm sand on the beach, and the deep green of tall grass. Live in the spirit of summer, be the spirit of summer. To these rules hold true, and many good things will come to you."
