Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It enjoys running through a nearby pumpkin patch.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Pumpkin Cuckoo likes to pretend that he isn't really a small Pumpkin dragon but a Guardian of Nature exchanged as an egg for one of Fairy Magrat's. Ever since he saw a cuckoo do this to a robin's nest he loves to dream about one day growing up, becoming far bigger than his parents and leaving the pumpkin patches around the human village.

He reasons since no one has seen one of those elusive dragons for generations, there is no way to be sure, that they DON'T start life looking very much like a small Pumpkin Pygmy and no dragon has been able to convince him otherwise.
