Aww... It’s a cute baby drake. It has the colors of a bright summer day.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young drakes are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own.

At first glance, Dowenlade could be mistaken as perhaps a rare type of pygmy, due to her size and large wings. However, she is in fact a Day Glory, stayed from growing up by a spell cast by her keeper. Playful and hyperactive, she could not stand becoming an adult, because to her eyes, all they ever did was sleep and hunt, leaving no room for play. Just before she was about to grow up, she came to her keeper and begged her to keep her in her present form. Taking pity on the distraught creature, she agreed, but not before telling her that once the spell was cast, there was no way back—she would stay a hatchling forever. She accepted the consequences, and a strange light engulfed her, and after a strange cold sensation, she emerged, a child forever.
