Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It has bright blue eyes, and is as clumsy as any other hatchling, but it never seems to get injured.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Ecatrix was raised from an abandoned egg found by a kind but slightly forgetful wandering witch. He hatched in the back of a brightly painted wagon that was one of many in a traveling show caravan that followed the ancient highway along the foot of the mountains.

Ecatrix loved to curl up by the witch's side as she drove the wagon or walk alongside the slow-moving caravan. Some worried that he might become dangerous, but as he grew older he often helped the travelers by scaring away bandits and wild animals.

Shortly after Ecatrix's wings had fully grown; he saw an adult pair of wild dragons like himself. He realized that he would soon outgrow the witch's small wagon, and he did not wish to leave her. He asked the witch if she knew a spell that would stop him from aging. Though forgetful, the witch was wise and knew many things about dragons. She cast a spell on Ecatrix that would keep him young forever, and they still travel to this day along the road at the foot of the mountains.
