Vampire Dragons are members of the undead. They sustain themselves by drinking the blood of others. It is said that they are only “alive” at night, and seem dead or asleep during the day, as they cannot endure sunlight for long periods of time. Vampire Dragons can only reproduce by changing the eggs of other dragons, puncturing the shell with their fangs and injecting venom that kills the baby inside.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Mortae is the Queen and Leader of the Ater, a group of dragons that have been abandoned or wronged by the Regals. Some say she was supposed to be an heiress to the throne before being bitten, some say she's a foreigner who saw what Regals do behind everyone's backs, and some say she's just evil. She hasn't confirmed or denied any of these facts, and just goes about her nights finding fresh blood to feed on while exacting revenge on any who oppose her. However, she's actually like a mother to those within the group despite her harsh actions and reputation.

The Ater are known to be rebels of sorts, plotting against the growing Regals. They consist of misfits and abandoned hatchlings, some dragons with intention of overthrowing the Regals, and some who just want to assist those who have taken them in and cared for them when no one would. The Leader is Mortae the Vampire, and while her own intentions are unknown, she is like a mother to the group.
