Cheese Dragons are not actually alive. They are enchanted items of food that act almost identically to dragons. They have no need to eat, but they must “live” in humid environments or they will dry out and harden.

Casearium does not try to delude himself: he knows he is not a real dragon. Perhaps he cannot even call himself a real hunk of cheese, after all the magic that has been worked to give him a dragons shape and mind.  He dreams of the things he can never do—breathe in fresh air, have blood to flush his face when he sees a pretty dragoness, have children—and dreams of having tears to weep for his lack. He feels that not being a real dragon makes him inferior to the rest of The Flight and remains shy and withdrawn as he watches them fight, love, and simply be real from a lonely distance.

An unlikely angel has descended into his darkness in the form of the young Magi Aixic. The cocky mage sees fulfilling Casearium's wish to be a real dragon to be his greatest challenge. As a result, the two spend a large amount of time together as solving this problem becomes increasingly important. They've yet to make any real progress—except perhaps in giving both dragons a real friendship.
