Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Little Rosemary is a hatchling with a mental sickness the humans call split personality. While it is not normal to have a dragon with a mental illness, it is believed that Little Rosemary's illness stems from her species as a vine dragon, and her lot in life as an Eternal Hatchling. Cursed to remain a hatchling forever, Little Rosemary's personality can range from an incredible sweetness, to a bad-tempered spoiled little dragonling. Her mental psych is damaged even more due to the fact that she was found abandoned on the roadside, frightened, filthy, and injured after being tormented by a group of cruel human children. This has caused her to have a strong fear of any humans. This fear has forced the members of the clan to sit with her in a separate cavern on the opposite side of the cave whenever humans visit; an act that occurs often. Despite this, between her episodes of bad-temper, Little Rosemary is a happy, healthy Eternal Hatchling.
