Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Katagi no mesu is an angry little hatchling and is always snapping at others. She lashes her tail at those she doesn't like, usually burning the one she is attacking. Because she is not full grown, she isn't quite as foul-tempered as the adults of her breed, but she has a very short temper and her attitude can change at the drop of a hoof. She may be friendly for a few moments, letting others approach before she decides better of it and chases them off. This equates to her having very few friends and even those she wouldn't really call 'friends' as she only associates with them if she can get something from them.

Her name means 'Temperamental Filly'.
