Vampire Dragons are members of the undead. They sustain themselves by drinking the blood of others. It is said that they are only “alive” at night, and seem dead or asleep during the day, as they cannot endure sunlight for long periods of time. Vampire Dragons can only reproduce by changing the eggs of other dragons, puncturing the shell with their fangs and injecting venom that kills the baby inside.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

The reason Striggoi stands out from the rest of the vampires in the tribe is because she can remember her life 'before the bite', as they call it, but some think she is making everything up. Striggoi was bitten and turned by Morroi, another vampire dragon that would grow to be her best friend. Striggoi remembers very little of her previous life, but she can recall the sounds that she heard through her eggshell and can piece together that she was an unwanted egg kicked out of her nest when it got too full. After tumbling down a steep hill, Striggoi remembers hearing strange hissing and rasping noises, a sudden flare of intense pain, then everything turning very, very cold and dark. Striggoi currently has a very good egg-biting record; every single egg that she has bitten has successfully turned and been safely kept by the rest of the vampires.
