Dorsal Dragons are so named because they have large fins along their backs that can be raised and lowered at will. They use these fins to regulate body temperature; they raise them to cool off when they become overheated. The bright colors on the fins double as a means of attracting mates.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Zedelian is considered the leader of his 'family' of mixed dragons. Like his second in command who's nickname is 'Odd One Out', he doesn't have a mate nor does he care to have one. He has thought about before, but realizes it would be too dangerous for him to have a family of his own let alone a mate. Out of all the dragons in his family he has most of the responsibility. It's his job to make sure they're all safe and unharmed. Zedelian sometimes regrets choosing to be leader, but realizes that without him, his family might die. Zedelian has moments where he wonders if he qualifies to be leader, but when he looks at his 'family' he knows he's doing something right. Just like his family needs him, he needs them.
