Coal Wyrms are a poorly known species, as their underground habitat makes it hard to study them. Most observations of Coal Wyrms have been around blacksmith shops, where hatchlings have sometimes been known to take up residence. It is thought that their heads were once a single head; however, due to heat stress from their body temperature and radiation from their subterranean environment and diet, they have mutated to better handle these pressures. Some attribute earthquakes and strange, underground noises to Coal Wyrms. Nevertheless, most Coal Wyrms live too far below the surface to disturb life overhead. Despite their intimidating appearance, they are peaceful and gentle giants. They consume all varieties of earthen matter. As they live in the semi-dark—their inner fire does provide some light—they are an eyeless species, instead navigating by sound and heat sensing capabilities. Thick plates and coarse scales reminiscent of the mineral they are named after protect these dragons.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Two-headed dragons are unique enough to deserve a separate classification from ordinary dragons. They have two necks, two brains, two mouths, but one stomach and one main body. The two heads usually work together, but there are times when they will fight each other, snapping back and forth. Their unique anatomy prevents them from breeding with single-headed dragons.
