Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. Its eyes glow brightly at night, and it enjoys attacking insects and small animals.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Raven Like a Writing Desk has always been an odd hatchling. He doesn't like to roughhouse as much as the other black hatchlings he knows; instead, he prefers to spend his time solving and devising riddles. Unfortunately, while he is very good at solving most riddles, he isn't very good at creating ones that make sense!

The one riddle he has never solved is the one he was named for: he still has no idea why a raven is like a writing desk, and hasn't given up on asking every dragon he meets.
