This hatchling appears to be... dead?

Perhaps not. It seems to be active during the night.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Thric Kornari's name means "no heart", and it certainly seems true at times. He was bitten as an egg like all vampire dragons, but after his parents chased away the vampire dragon that bit his egg, they decided to keep him. Unfortunately, his vampire nature quickly became too much for them to handle, so they sent him away. He wandered alone for several days until exhaustion overcame him. When he woke up, he was in the castle of an infamous wizard. The wizard, seeing that his little captive was awake, reached to grab the hatchling, but Thric Kornari bite his hand, and the wizard accidentally cast a freeze spell over poor Thric Kornari, making him a permanent hatchling. Thric Kornari, with the help of a captive pillow dragon, escaped from the castle and went on a search for his parents. When he found their nest, however, it became apparent that something else had been there first—and taken his parents!
