This breed of dragon results from eggs or hatchlings that have been neglected. They are usually rebellious, not obeying their masters, sometimes even attacking them. However, their neglect as a hatchling leaves them crippled, and they are weak compared to other breeds, causing them to stay with their masters for protection.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Holdfast Weyr is known as the Coil by former Braid dragons, Seawrack Tangle by former Xenotangle Weyr residents, and Holdfast Weyr by everyone else. Even though nobody can agree on what to call the place, it manages to be a close-knit community of dragons united by special living requirements. Ulkaz grew up envious of her family. They were all blusangs and prize dragons, bright-scaled and beautiful, while she was an afterthought that almost failed to hatch. She wasn't strong enough to gather a hoard or raise a family, nor could she even use magic. Everything changed when a passing zyumorph gave her a lift to Holdfast Weyr. The research weyr had needed someone to test assistive spells, and Ulkaz was just the dragon to do so. At last, she had a purpose and a place in the world.
