Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

No one is sure why Redgut left the clan. He went missing one night and was found months later hunting with a nearby wolf pack. He has become a bit of a legend among the local villages, as he always begins his hunts at dusk, sending forth a telepathic howl that carries for miles. Some say he was cursed by a wizard, becoming the antithesis of a rooster: howling at sunset, harmful to livestock, and a predator of man. It is uncertain how reliable these rumors are, since no increase in casualty rates has been noted since he joined the pack, and it is known to the dragons who raised him that he does not accept the position of pack alpha, despite being the strongest fighter and best hunter in the pack. Instead, he allows the normal shifts of power to occur and remains at the position of beta male, serving as the enforcer of the alpha's commands.
