Kingcrownes are a mysterious and proud species, possessing some of the most beautiful and reflective scales of all dragons. Despite this, what is sought after most is not their scales, but the silk-like hairs that grow along their head, neck, and elbows. The hairs themselves have a magical shine, and are thought to have powerful healing properties when used in potions. The hairs of a Kingcrowne are even believed to bring good fortune to those who possess them. Though it is obvious that these dragons possess magical abilities, it is still not entirely clear what they are fully capable of. Most of a Kingcrowne’s time is spent grooming itself, keeping its scales and fur in top condition.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Like most other Kingcrownes, much of Astrid's time is spent grooming. However, her goal in constantly preening herself is to become as hideous as possible. Whenever not actively involved in some other activity, she spends her time removing scales without notable imperfections, scratching off hairs that line up too well with the others, and generally trying to become as ugly as possible. This goes beyond simply intimidating predators and hunters, as she seems to take genuine pride in her abominable appearance, going so far as to adopt "ugly" movements and communicative patterns.

When not occupying herself with "perfecting" her appearance, she works on improving her magical abilities. She especially enjoys the use of transformative and destructive spells, particularly as a weapon against intruders and enemies. However, she seems to have trouble actually casting these spells. She excels in healing and creative magic, though she doesn't seem to enjoy their use.
