Guardian Dragons have large shields on the end of their tails. Although the shields appear to be heavy, they are light, yet nearly unbreakable. Guardian Dragons use their tail-shields, as well as their wings, to deflect attacks and protect others. Often, they will guard the eggs and hatchlings of a nest while others are away. They are generally peaceful, and will not retaliate unless necessary. They have no need to forage or hunt, as they are fed by those they protect.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

As the oldest dragon in Wolf's care, Gardutal has witnessed the birth, hatching, and growth of every dragon in the cavern. The first complete memory of her life is of her keeper fending off a rogue dragon attempting to make a meal of her when she wandered outside as a hatchling. Her keeper's unshakable resolve of protecting her showed Gardutal what it means to be a truly responsible Guardian dragon. She realized innocent fun could sometimes lead to life-threatening danger, and so made a promise to herself when Wolf came home one day with a new dragon egg. Never again would she leave her keeper or future friends in harm's way.

Since that day, Gardutal sits at the mouth of the cavern watching for intruders who may come too close, scaring them off with a flash of her fangs and beating of her wings. Sometimes she tries to teach Eveo, the other dragon of her kind in the cavern, to be as responsible as she is. Unfortunately, however, it ends with Gardutal's disappointment in the youngster.
