This hatchling appears to be... dead?

Perhaps not. It seems to be active during the night.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

This hatchling loves to play tricks on others by making strange sounds during the night. She has mastered a large gamut of sounds, from wolf howls to rhythmically sloshing waves, from the rat-a-tat of a woodpecker (she ate the one that kept her awake all day) to the hoots of an owl, from the blowing wind to voices calling out (though no one can say whose name is called). She only makes the sounds on a full belly, though; she prefers to stalk her prey silently and feed early in the night.
