Deep Sea Dragons, as their name suggests, spend most of their time in the darkest depths of the sea. They have a bioluminescent dorsal spine that serves to attract prey and communicate with their own kind. As with many deep sea animals, they generally eat whatever they can manage to bait. They rarely leave the ocean floor, surfacing only during breeding season. When they do choose to travel to the shallower depths, they avoid bright lights and will only come up far away from shore.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Despite his absolute and abiding love for big, tasty fish, especially tuna, Nerida is always very, very, very careful about how he goes about hunting them. If possible, he will get above his prey, to strike downwards unseen.

This caution stems from an incident in Nerida's adolescence. On his first unsupervised hunting trip he was stalking a tuna almost as big as he was. He was so focussed on his chosen prey, he was oblivious to everything around him.

He had just got into position to strike from beneath when suddenly the tuna jerked from side to side and shot upwards. Incensed, Nerida followed it. Up, up, and up it went, all the way to the surface. In his anger, Nerida burst out of the water, not stopping to think why a tuna would behave in such a manner.

Unfortunately, he also failed to notice the very proud fisherman holding the tuna in the air by its tail. His teeth sunk deeply into his arm, before he spat it back out. "Humans taste bad" is his opinion of the incident.
