Gold dragons are the ones most often killed by humans, who consider their scales to be extremely valuable. These golden scales grant them a high level of protection, similar to armor, and they use this to their advantage in battle.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. As the first male of his species to enter the cave, Winds Without Words has a high opinion of himself. He stands for hours on end staring mutely into the sun while his scales glisten, and only retires to his resting place when the sun has descended. He is a proud male who will challenge any who oppose him, and his strong scales protect him well. Even in the heat of battle, while his opponents roar their scorn, Winds Without Words refuses to utter aloud his thoughts. In his mind, his teeth are as swords, his claws as spears, and his wings as a hurricane.
