This breed of dragon was thought to exist only in legend. Although their name varies between cultures, they are often referred to as “Guardians of Nature.” They are able to channel the forces of fire, ice and lightning, which allows them to wield tremendous power. Seen very rarely, it is thought that they only become active when something is threatening the territory they have chosen to guard. In order to protect their chosen home, these dragons are incredibly adaptable; they have been seen everywhere from remote mountain ranges, to ancient forests, to the darkest depths of the ocean.
Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Father of All, Second Guardian, Ailill was once considered the greatest dragon of all, a paragon of virtuous wisdom who raised many of the dragons within the flock, alongside his mate, the Desipis known as Verlornes.
But that was in the past, before the death of his mate and the exile of his son. Now, few see the Guardian anymore, save for the Cave Mother and a very select few who know where he has hidden himself away from the world. All others think that he has withdrawn from the flock because the sorrow at losing part of his family was too much for the gentle Dragon, and he has left so that he might grieve for them in peace.
The truth, if they knew, would shock them.
Ailill is Head of The Queen's Shadow, that Dragon known for his vicious, cruel treatment of traitors, thought to exist only as a story. Anger consumed his once gentle heart, now he devotes his time to finding his former son and his accomplices, so that they might be punished for their crimes.
