Young drakes are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own.

Sandpaw is a member of the Feline clan. He decided to stop growing just before other hatchlings reach maturation because he never wanted to leave the confines of the nursery. Sandpaw isn't very bright, in fact he's quite dumb. He spends countless hours running around in a circle chasing his tail or sitting alone and chewing on his wings. The nursery keeper Redtail tolerates the poor scrap and cares for him just as he would any other hatchling.
