Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. Its eyes glow brightly at night, and it enjoys attacking insects and small animals.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Possibly the most disdainful creature in Cave Ember, Sootwyrm creeps around the cave, snooping into other dragon's conversations and spying on them for Ashfyre, Shurikai, and his mother, Obsidianfyre. He wallows in self-pity, whining that he deserved the right to grow more than anybody. Ever since Tetar and Gaeva froze him, sensing that he would become a dangerous and malicious dragon when he grew up, he rejects any assistance, saying that he is better off without the rest of the dragons. Plenty of the cave members want to be rid of him, but his mother protects him fiercely, though he has never said a word of thanks for her protection and care. His father, on the other hand, is so ashamed of his son that he has never spoken a word to him or about him, and ignores his presence altogether. Sootwyrm's main hobby is frightening and bullying those weaker than him, which he has been seen doing often.
