Paper Dragons are not truly living creatures. They are pieces of parchment enchanted by magic, and as such, are very vulnerable to fire. However, they behave almost like dragons. The only place where their behavior differs is breeding: paper dragons cannot breed.

Shy Patience, despite lacking an actual gender, is regarded by the pack as a female dragon. Even though females are usually highly respected pack members, with Shy Patience it's simply not the case. Shy Patience is the lowest ranked of all of the pack elders, and has no significance to anyone but the pack leader, Lavender Beginning. In fact, if it were not for her rank, she would be sent out of the pack. But, as it is, the pack is burdened with the job of protecting the poor girl, and that makes her and the pack depressed. Even with the poor status among her peers, she keeps a somewhat joyful attitude and is optimistic that her rank will one day improve.
