Nocturne Dragons are a strange breed. Whenever light strikes their bodies, they are frozen in whatever position they were in. This leaves them vulnerable and they rely on camouflage to keep themselves safe. They are often mistaken for statues when in this frozen state, but Nocturne dragons do not actually turn into stone. Rather, they merely idle until the sun goes down. At night, these dragons come to life, proving themselves to be powerful fliers, although little else is known about their true behavior.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Nin fights in the war. The war is between dragons with human masters and ones living in packs. Nin's human master is named Jack, and Jack has an older sister, who owns Nin's older sister, Gaella. There was a war breakout at dusk. Nocturne dragons are known for coming alive at night, and when the sun hits their scales, they turn to stone. Nin and Gaella are both strong fighters. The sunlight could be seen rising over the horizon. A pack of ridgewing dragons charged into battle, directly at Nin. Gaella saw them and knew they would turn to stone soon. Gaella found a large tree, flew over to Nin, and pushed Nin out of the way. Nin was shoved into a tree, where he was protected by shade. He wouldn't be protected for long though. Gaella told Nin to run, so Nin ran to his master, Jack's house. Just before Nin turned to stone, he saw the sunshine hit Gaella. Gaella turned to stone. The ridgewing pack took her, and Nin felt bad that he couldn't save her.
