Cassare Dragons are known for their magic-deadening abilities. Though not a conscious ability, a large field surrounds the dragon through which magic is passively nullified. This field is strongest near the dragon itself, and falls off with distance. The absence of magic often makes other creatures avoid them, though some will have the opposite reaction and seek refuge instead. It has also caused them to be hunted, as though the field is severely weakened once dead, their bones and scales retain some of the effect. Possessing such an item is considered a necessity by those who expect to face hostile magic.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Angel was raised by a man known as "Valoran the Unyielding". Valoran was a well-known pirate, infamous for his volatile personality. He found Angel's egg in a chest looted from one of the ships he and his crew raided. Intrigued by the idea of having a dragon aboard, he kept the egg and raised it to adulthood.

When she grew up, Angel's skills were a blessing to the crew. The sight of a dragon crashing down upon the deck was enough to convince most ships to forfeit their gold without a fight. Those who resisted faced the wrath of Angel and the twenty pirates at her back. This earned her endless praise and affection from Valoran. Though she eventually outlived her "father", Angel continued to lead her crew in a relentless march across the sea.

When Sevra, a peculiar Black Tea hatchling who kept a scroll of its own, asked if it could observe her and her crew, Angel agreed. It was through Sevra that she met her lifemate, Rock N Roll Ziricote. The two are now inseparable partners in crime.
