Penny's survival in the cave is nothing short of a miracle given how close she has come to being singed, stepped on, or outright eaten. It was the Magi Dragon Arakkis who decided after she hatched that she deserved a chance to live. It wasn't her fault the guardians mistook her egg for a dragon egg. So he carefully wove a spell to make her sentient and able to communicate as his kind did, telepathically, and he made it known in no uncertain terms that any dragon who harmed her could deal with him and his fearsome powers. After a few close calls and some nasty curses lifted only after true contrition, Penny's place became more secure. She's a simple soul, content to scratch and pick and watch the bright, colorful beings live their lives around her, yet she has proven herself useful in helping to keep some of the more delicate eggs warm without danger of crushing. She adores Arakkis with all her heart, a sentiment returned.
