Vampire Dragons are members of the undead. They sustain themselves by drinking the blood of others. It is said that they are only “alive” at night, and seem dead or asleep during the day, as they cannot endure sunlight for long periods of time. Vampire Dragons can only reproduce by changing the eggs of other dragons, puncturing the shell with their fangs and injecting venom that kills the baby inside.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Moonrise Song (Moon) has a personality unlike most vampires. Rhiannon first adopted him as a frightened abandoned hatchling. When he grew up, Moon learned to drink only the blood of recently killed animals. He doesn't bite other eggs because he wants no other dragon to suffer the way he has. Only once has he bitten an egg, and that was to help Rhiannon's friend, PeonyFlower, get a vampire of her own, and this was against his will.

Moon also has a loving mate, Midnight Grace, even though they could never lay eggs.

On the night Moon asked Grace to be his mate, he knew the time was right. Moon placed his wing around Grace's shoulders and shared what had been on his mind for several weeks before. Grace gently pressed her head into Moon's shoulder and said that this is what she had wanted all along.

As the vampire and nocturne dragon flew together under a full moon, Moonrise Song recalled that he had everything-friends in the cave, a home, a kind master, and a mate.
