Avatars of Change are unpredictable, exuberant dragons whose unique connection to magic has saturated their entire bodies. It is said that possessing one of their iridescent scales can change one’s fate, and many have sought the favor of these dragons hoping to receive a scale as a gift.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Alatar was born long before humans and dragon-kind dwelt together in peace. When he was a hatchling, he witnessed a war that lasted until he grew into the magnificent creature that he is today. Having only seen the evil of humans, Alatar despised them and took every opportunity to devour them. Then, in the darkest hour of night, a small, sickly child stumbled into his cave. Throughout the night she clung to his underbelly, sleeping against his heat, trembling in her dreams, and perhaps, not realizing that what she held onto was a dragon. During that long night, Alatar's heart changed, for he finally saw the good of humans.
