Kingcrownes are a mysterious and proud species, possessing some of the most beautiful and reflective scales of all dragons. Despite this, what is sought after most is not their scales, but the silk-like hairs that grow along their head, neck, and elbows. The hairs themselves have a magical shine, and are thought to have powerful healing properties when used in potions. The hairs of a Kingcrowne are even believed to bring good fortune to those who possess them. Though it is obvious that these dragons possess magical abilities, it is still not entirely clear what they are fully capable of. Most of a Kingcrowne’s time is spent grooming itself, keeping its scales and fur in top condition.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Rainbow Obsidian is in love with the shy Snow named Ornament. For his part, Ornament still prefers solitude, but if he chooses to spend time with anyone besides his fellow wild-born Snow, Bauble, it's almost always Rainbow. Other females sometimes discover and pursue Ornament. Now and then he gives these females the egg they want from him, in hopes they will go away. But he genuinely likes Rainbow, with her calm, sweet demeanor and gentle ways.

Rainbow doesn't begrudge Ornament his asocial nature; the Kingcrowne simply finds other things to do when he wants to be alone. Rainbow meets regularly with a small group of other female dragons to exchange rumors; to drink rare teas from dragon's mugs (which are enchanted to be useful to those who lack thumbs); and to take turns conjuring snacks—everything from knight kebobs to frosted cakes and candied fruit. She loves to throw parties at the slightest excuse. Her holiday and festival parties are major social events at the Breedery.
