This hatchling appears to be... dead?

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Sam was once destined for glory, as he had been bitten by the coven matriarch, The Bloody Matron. She intended for him to be her heir, to become leader once she died. Unfortunately, he had been grabbed by some strange human hours after he hatched. The human kept muttering about "freezing", and this terrified Sam. He didn't want to be frozen into a block of ice for eternity, but he was too weak to escape. The human took him to a cottage, where he was placed in a crystal box. The human chanted some strange words sounding vaguely like "Youth" and threw a potion at Sam which exploded into a cloud of blue smoke. The human giggled gleefully, and took Sam back to Matron. Matron knew something was wrong, however, and she soon discovered he had been frozen. She immediately rejected him, and shrieked "You are stuck as a pathetic hatchling, so you are too weak to be my heir!". Since then Sam has been shunned by the other vampires, and he spends most of his time sleeping.
