Cheese Dragons are not actually alive. They are enchanted items of food that act almost identically to dragons. They have no need to eat, but they must “live” in humid environments or they will dry out and harden.

Rarum Caseum—"Rare Cheese" in Latin. Rarum does not speak. Whether this is a personal choice or because they are made of cheese, no one seems to know. Rarum does write, very simple words on spare scraps of parchment. They use these written messages to purchase an alarming amount of cheese. Rarum has never been seen to eat any of the cheese they purchase, which would seem like a form of cannibalism anyway. It is therefore speculated that somewhere Rarum is hoarding a vast stash of various cheeses, which quietly age, increasing in both value and stench. Despite being a known oddity, hatchlings adore Rarum, and often excitedly greet them in passing. Rarum responds with a cheerful opening and closing of their mouth, and sometimes gifts the young dragons a bit of cheese.
