Pillow Dragons are covered in enormous amounts of fur affectionately referred to as fluff. Despite their deceivingly large size, they can still fly even with such tiny wings because their bodies are remarkably light. Pillow Dragons have a habit of sleeping for up to eighteen hours a day, waking only in short bursts. During their few waking hours, they take the time to hunt for prey. Once a pillow dragon becomes an adult, its fur grows very slowly. Pillow dragon fur is used to make very expensive and valuable cloth known as “dragon cashmere.”

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

As an egg, Orvyn of the Southwest was discovered by the human girl named Flight and was raised along with one other hatchling, a Brimstone named Calcite of the Gems, in a large cave on the border of the Lake of Elgar, hidden within the Mountains of Elgar. The elder of the two hatchlings, Orvyn was the serious one. She would often sleep at the edge of the cave and open one eye lazily when Calcite of the Gems called out loudly to her to play fight, which she stoutly refused. The two, despite being so different in personality, were still companions and, to her amusement, Flight often woke up in the middle of the night to see Orvyn and Calcite sleeping close together. Orvyn and Calcite have remained good friends, although when they're together Orvyn often ends up frowning at her brother's rough ways. Occasionally, Orvyn will visit Flight in her cave and allow her new brother and sister hatchlings to climb over her. It was during these times that Orvyn met Tikrl, who is now her mate.
