- or recognize us in return
  - so far beyond our comprehension
    - It would have
      - In the life of the universe
        I was moving again
        I wanted to go to space
        to put it all in perspective
        When I went outside for repairs
        That for one moment
        I could look down
      - so how can it really
    - destroyed me utterly
      - be said to matter
        I would find myself
        and see it all
        every human that ever existed
        staring out into space
        the living and the dead
        hanging below me
      - The stars began to wink out
  - that we could not
    - And I know that
      - one by one
        for a few minutes
        on a tiny ball of carbon
        On the Daedalus I found
        and then when I checked the time
      - and I thought
        hours would have passed
        I don't remember if I slept
        the sense of a presence
        something out there
    - there was no possibility
      - perhaps for a second
        The tether coiled out behind me
        Something that wasn't the earth
        And it was getting closer
        spooling meter
        The whole station
        shook violently
      - perhaps for a hundred years
- And I wish that I could
  - properly recognize them as such
    - it could ever have noticed
      - that I had reached
        after meter after meter
        rattling and pitching
        My first instinct was to check
        Where was I going
        that the Earth
        was still below us
      - the end of time
        I floated slowly off
        and not the victim of some
        dreadful cosmic disaster
        into the empty unending space
        But when I reached the window
        it still hung there
    - I existed
      - and I was watching the gradual
        and the tether line
        serene below us
        As I looked- I saw
        just kept on going
        drops of red flowing
        through the air in front of me
      - fading of the universe
        The Daedalus drifted
        I reached up to my ears
        and my hand came away wet
        further and further away
        Don't try to tell me
        sound can't travel in a vacuum
  - Minds so strange and colossal
    - I do not believe in God
      - And then I realized the obvious
        I could feel myself falling up
        I know
        I pushed off- as I began to move
        falling out
        through the station
        I stopped
      - I could not see the stars
        falling off of everything
        I didn't grab or hit anything
        I did nothing
        that could be called a world
        to slow my momentum
        I just stopped
    - I can't believe
      - because something
      - was blocking them
