pops out of the frame
but knows are precious to her
pop out of the old brick
But the door refuses to open
She pounds helplessly
The handle of the front door
supposed safety of your home
Not indifferent
but hungry-eage
r
begins to glow red-hot
to take everything from you
to burn down your life
one by one
on the smoking wood
the metal bending and distorting
in any sense it can reach
Can you hear
as it melts
as their voices go quiet
From the crack underneath
the crackling promise of kindled
despair that it whispers
the fire drags itself forward
into your uneasy- dreaming ear
Sabina senses it
curl and float away as ash
and her salvation tumbles away
Pushing down the crushing grief
curling and caressing
feels it drawing near
Tries to bring herself
the rough coir of the mat
to do something about the place
that is crumbling around her
she charges to the window
that cheerily announced- Welcome
Its movements are flickering
She barely notices how hot
her tears are becoming
into the impossible
rushing to reach the fire escape
rhythmic- almost hypnotic
Which sense is the first
to warn her
and as her mind screams at her
What nerves are the first ones
to fire the white-hot bolts
The window frame judders
to stand- to run- to escape
she simply sits there
