Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Crystal Rose is a very fragile hatchling.

He mostly just curls up between Angel's front paws instead of playing with the other hatchlings, as their war games are to dangerous for him to take part in. Wanting him on the team, however, Kay declared him their counsellor and lets him take part in the games while staying in the safety of the cave.
