Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It is very brightly colored and loves fruit.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

H0-oHH the horse dragon started noticing astrapi-transformed rats in his tower. He and his magelight companion tracked them down to a hidden storeroom from the days when their home was still a wizard's tower, in which there were more rats, lots of astrapi mana, and a tiny, mana-transformed tangar. From what the two could tell, the wyrmling had hatched in that storeroom and been surviving (somewhat unhealthily) on asrtapi mana and rats ever since. They retrieved him from the hole, named him xRAiK, and tried as best as they could to take care of them.

xRAiK loves his adopted parents even though he is always running around like a maniac. He is unfortunately stunted from poor nutrition—H0-oHH didn't realise tangars are mostly herbivorous right away—but he still runs all over the tower and town. The local humans have incorporated him into their myth of the town, believing that he is a living embodiment of the lightningbolt that supposedly destroyed H0-oHH's (largely still intact) tower.
