Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Variren, the clan's first frozen hatchling, never gendered, but thinks of herself as female.  Variren (her name means "changing" in ancient draconic) is the leader of the clan's frozen hatchlings.  She boldly refuses any adult assistance, and takes pride in her self-appointed duty of defending the young sub-clan.  Variren also was the one who found the small valley where her sub-clan now resides.  She is stubborn and proud, and while she is too young to have the wisdom of a true leader, Variren always tries to do what is best for the sub-clan that she rules over.
