Sunstone Dragons are named after the orb on their tails, which resembles the gem of the same name. Their social structure resembles a lion pride, with one dominant male and several females banded together with their young. They prefer arid climates where they can blend in and dig for minerals and gemstones that they not only collect, but eat. The more gems they consume, the larger their tail stone grows. They are an aggressive breed; it is not uncommon to see two males battling for mates and territory.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Speckled with Sun was a loner Sunstone dragon. After being run out of his pride while trying to fight with the leader dragon for a mate, his pride no longer accepted him. While roaming the dessert in search of a new pride, Speckled with Sun was attacked by another Sunstone dragon. When he was just about to escape, the attacker crushed one of Speckled with Sun's wings with its stone tail. With a broken wing and other battle wounds, Speckled with Sun managed to find an oasis inhabited by a small village. While Speckled with Sun was cautious of the villagers, they mostly left Speckled with Sun alone. At night, Speckled with Sun would dig for gems so as to not attract attention; however, with a crushed wing, digging for gems became impossible and he went many nights without food. One night, his current master, speckledXdust, stayed at the oasis village to do research. Against the villagers warnings to approach the dragon, speckledXdust cautiously went to him.
