Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. Its eyes glow brightly at night, and it enjoys attacking insects and small animals.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Frozen New Moon is a mischevious black hatchling. One day when she was playing with her best friend, Darknight Scales, she spilled a vial of mysterious bright powder onto herself while rough-housing in Snowcrest Winterfeather's medicine cavern. She emerged out from the cavern feeling perfectly fine, but her worried friend reported it to the white medicine dragon, who instantly inspected the hatchling. He came to the conclusion that the powder she had spilled had inflicted a condition that prevented aging. Furious that she would never grow up like Darknight, she sulked in her cave and refused to come out. She only came out when she found out Darknight had asked Snowcrest Winterfeather to do the same to her so her friend wouldn't be jealous when she grew up.
