Caligene Dragons have long been considered omens of death—reinforced by the skeletal markings on their bodies. They exert a malignant force on the world around them, causing other living things to slowly waste away in their presence. Caligenes favor the seasons of summer and autumn, disappearing entirely from the forests they inhabit during winter and spring. These malevolent dragons are physically weak, though this is countered by their natural stealthiness and alarming speed—enabling them to close in on large targets quickly and silently to create ambushes from which prey cannot escape.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Ironically given his breed's reputation, Demonic Moth is the mate and companion of a Spirit Ward Dragon, Firefly Ghost. They first met when he happened to wander into the territory she was protecting at the time, bringing his malicious aura with him. She inevitably came to chase him out, and they had a brief fight. Curiosity quickly overtook aggression, however, and Ghost interrupted the fight to ask what exactly Moth was. Neither had ever seen a dragon quite like the other before, and they had a long conversation about their different lives and experiences.

This encounter sparked something in both dragons, the realization that they had only seen a tiny part of what Valkemare had to offer. There were many breeds they could not even comprehend the existence of, and they wanted to know more. They began traveling together, intent on discovering new and unusual breeds of dragons. While they don't always get along, they find each other to be interesting company.
