Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

People are often surprised to see Iolanth hunting during the day as the breed description leads them to believe that Black dragons are nocturnal. At one point she would politely tell them that, like a cat, she will sleep for an hour at most (at a time) instead of several hours all at once. Unfortunately, as all humans except for her owner seem alike to her and since dragons live for thousands of years and humans for decades, she does not realize that there are different generations of humans asking her why she isn't nocturnal. Instead, she thinks that it is the same humans asking her over and over again and so she takes off in disgust at their poor memories.
