This hatchling appears to be... dead?

Perhaps not. It seems to be active during the night.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

One moonless night, a small hatchling hastened home, alone and afraid. He'd been told to not stay out so late, but he'd been stubborn and not listened to his mother. A bat hurtled past, chasing moths, causing him to jump and cry out in fear. He ran, claws scraping against dry leaves, roots like grasping hands tripping him. A shadow passed over him silently, blocking out the meager light from the stars that trickled down from between the gnarled branches of dead trees. He fell, tumbling end over end, landing on his back, looking up, seeing-

A mother dragon mourned the loss of her child. A small hatchling stumbled through the woods, searching for the way out, forever trapped in the wooden labyrinth. A little lost hatchling, a boy, one day led astray. A little lost boy, taken. A little lost boy, never again to see the light of day.
