Striped Dragons come in a dazzling array of colors complemented by an intricate pattern of stripes. These bright colors and patterns help attract their favorite food, insects. Because their prey is so tiny, striped dragons must spend a large portion of their day eating. The color of the offspring is usually determined by the dragon’s mate.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

When Savage first hatched out of his egg, he imprinted on the first creature he saw as his mother—which usually is a good and perfectly normal instinct, especially if no telepathic bond was established before hatching. But Savage's egg wasn't with his parents when he hatched. The first creature he saw was a human boy.

The child did his best but without a telepathic bond and without any experience in raising dragons, he quickly learned that he wasn't the best person to do so. After several years he finally found one of the legendary humans who lived with dragons and took care of them over the centuries and—with a heavy heart—parted ways with Savage for the hatchling's good.

Even today Savage's telepathy is rather crude and his manners oftentimes are more that of a human than that of a dragon and some of the other dragons in the clan still view him as some kind of savage. But all in all he now lives a happy and accepted life.
