Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Sky considers it a blessing that she was picked out of a hoard of her kin, brothers and sisters merely dumped and left to die. Even so, she's the runt of the litter, small and fragile even when compared to other Mints. Seeking to become the heroine of a modern retelling of The Ugly Duckling, the small Mint prays to the sky she will never reach that someday she may become as strong as her wild brothers and sisters.
